Water is the source of life and makes up 65% of the human body. It is so essential that mid-sized restaurants consume it at the beat of around 6 thousand gallons per day. This World Water Day, people around the world come together to celebrate this very special resource. But what does this date mean exactly and how can companies take practical steps to save water?

What is World Water Day?

World Water Day is held annually on the 22nd of March. The date aims to alert people, businesses and governments to the urgent need to preserve and save this valuable natural resource.

Why is World Water Day so important?

World Water Day celebrates the mere existence of water and forces us to stop to think of the 2.2 billion people living without access to clean water.

In 2022, the focus is groundwater, an invisible resource with an undeniable impact. Groundwater is found underground in aquifers, which are geological formations of rocks, sands and gravels that retain substantial amounts of water.

This water feeds springs, rivers, lakes and swamps, and penetrates the oceans. And in this way, it provides a large proportion of the water we use for drinking, sanitation, food production and industrial processes.

How important is it to save water?

Saving water is an important goal in any industry, but it is even more relevant in the food sector. Washing is the process that consumes the most water in an industrial kitchen, accounting for approximately two-thirds of total consumption. Water consumption is so significant during washing that, excluding agriculture, no other process spends so much of this resource in the food industry.

Saving water is one of the most important requirements for achieving business sustainability, which brings benefits to business performance, employee well-being and the environment.

A study by Morgan Stanley shows how companies that actively lead climate change achieve a higher return on investment than those which don’t. Business sustainability also translates into cost reduction. Take the case of PepsiCo, which, since 2015, has decreased production costs by 20% per unit thanks to water conservation measures in its processing centers.

Finally, saving water is important to the brand’s reputation, and 88% of consumers prefer companies that advocate sustainability-related causes.

What can companies do to save water?

There are many good practices to follow in industrial processes that contribute to water savings. This year, celebrate World Water Day by adopting measures appropriate to the reality of your company.

The first step is to measure. Establish reliable water consumption numbers, and regularly track data.

Then, take the opportunity provided by World Water Day to raise awareness in your teams. Saving water is everyone’s mission and employees in your company play a key role. Train your team on the benefits of water efficiency and the procedures to follow to use equipment correctly. Instruct them to report leaks, keep the space around the machines clean and dry, and solve simple problems quickly.

Also, it is vital to perform the correct equipment maintenance to prolong the longevity of the machine and ensure its energy and water efficiency.

How is Somengil contributing to the efficient use of this resource?

At Somengil, we work every day to create solutions that optimize the industrial washing process and consume fewer resources–water, energy and detergent. We support our customers in maximizing the productive use of our equipment, either through its optimized configuration, or through training and training.

To save more water, we equip our state-of-the-art machine, the MultiWasher, with the latest recycling and filtration technology. This machine can thus perform multiple washes with the same water. The results are unbeatable water savings: MultiWasher consumes only 1/3 of the water when compared to other industrial washing machines.

Another secret to saving water is picking a washing machine that is adapted to the type of utensils being washed. That is why we’ve developed a machine that washes everything from pots, plates, trays, supermarket carts and more.

At Somengil, we work every day to design more efficient solutions. So that when the next World Water Day comes, we can all celebrate with more optimism. Contact our team to see MultiWasher up and running.
